As a person who has worked as an email response customer service representative for a retailer, lifetime wasn't refusing to cancel this person's membership, they were simply advising the person that a membership can't be cancelled via email. They gave this person options on how to cancel their membership.

In many cases, email responders don't have the capability to perform certain functions, based on how a business is set up. Many businesses that have memberships require cancellation to be done in person and it's always included in the terms of service you signed when you become a member.

Lifetime Fitness in Cleveland, Ohio - You can't trust anyone...

We've been using the swim program at Lifetime Fitness in Beachwood, OH for our children. When my husband and I decided to do a triathlon we went to Lifetime for a swim coach. The head of the swim program personally signed me up and when it was time to cancel (with 30 days notice) I let her know that my husband and I would be done at the end of the next month as our training would be complete. At that point, she never told me the written cancellation was required and I mistakenly trusted that she would take care of cancelling for us in their system. When the charges showed up the following month, guess what...I was still being charged for our lessons. When I immediately called to discuss it, it took 4 days for them to call back...and she would not admit that she didn't tell me about the paper work. What a scam! Lifetime has the worse cancellation policies ever and the people are such jerks about it. The corporate culture must reinforce this "stick it to em'" approach to unhappy customers. How sad...for a company that is supposed to be about "a healthy way of life" they sure are not very helpful or understanding.

Lifetime Fitness in Chicago, Illinois - Dont join, better make sure you font get a serious life threatening illness. they still will take your money

So I loved the gym because of the set up, loved to work out alot.... First became ill in Sept. 2012. Didn't cancel or postpone membership in hopes of recovery.. Paid for membership that my girls and I didn't use, for almost a year...yep .paid.. Started trying to work out again in July 2013 against doc orders. Became seriously ill with a tumor that took my body over within few weeks tried to cancel or postpone this time not knowing if I'm gonna make it and so weak I could barely make the call.. Had to leave message that didn't get returned till 2 days later at 4 pm holiday weekend saying they will still charge another month and needed a doc. Note... What?/?? So I called bank had them blocked and this is my note that they are heartless money grabbing people.. Wow. Hard enough I can't work out something I love to do, so ill I can barely move im still young person with lots of hopes and 2 kids to try and fight for my life for. And there's people like this ..words can't describe how sick my stomach is. I would never had changed membership or anything if I could still move. They did this and I feel sorry for anyone in there path that gets Ill too..

Like The Facility, Like the People But Pissed Off With Cancellation Policy.

I and my wife join lifetime fitness last year (2012) in Pickerington, Ohio. We like the environment, the facility and people in club and were pretty happy until we decide to take a trip of abroad with my wife in middle of May of this year (2013). Because we were too busy in preparation of upcoming trip and did not go to club for couple day but a night before leaving for abroad, I stop by at club but receptionist told me that all staff member has already left for day and ask to come next day; I told her that as I am leaving for abroad next day so I afraid it would be hard for me to come again but I will call. Next day, I call to club and spoke with GM (Rob), I told him that I am going abroad so I want to suspend our membership for two month, Rob first ask me to come to club to sign up few paperwork but I told him that I am flying tonight thus it would be very hard for me to stop by in club, at this point he ask me send e-mail. I send him e-mail same day with detail; he reply with bunch of detail of club procedure and polices applies to cancellation and suspension of membership but in short he told me that club will charge full membership fee on my credit card for month of remaining days of May and full month of June (total for 1 and ½ month extra) before they can put my membership in suspension in July (I was coming back in middle July). This policy seems unfair to me and get pissed off, after exchange of couple of heated e-mail, I send him e-mail to CANCEL my membership instead of suspend membership. Rob reply to my message and ask me to come to club to sign cancellation notice or send cancellation notice via mail, I reply him and told that as I am flying abroad tonight thus it is not possible for me to stop by at club or send cancellation letter in mail and ask him to consider my e-mail the notice of cancellation of membership and as they need one month advance notice thus I allowed them to charge my credit card for membership fee for full month of June and I also inform my bank that do not honor any charge on my credit card from lifetime after month of June. For me this was done deal and I left for abroad.

In August, I got call from collection department of Lifetime fitness and they demand me to pay $269/- for 3 month past due. I told him that I have cancelled my membership in June, I am not using club since mid of May so I don’t think that I owe any money to lifetime but they keep insisting that as I did not show up at club to sign up cancellation notice thus I got to pay this past due balance. I provided them my cancellation notice e-mail as proof with complete story but they refuse to accept e-mail as proof of cancellation notice and threat me to hand over my case to collection agency. I even approach customer service in corporate office and explain my case but like collections depart they also insist me to pay money so I told them that I would prefer to pay more money to attorney instead of giving single penny to Lifetime fitness.

I am planning to sue lifetime if anyone is will to join; contact me.

You should really start reading things you sign. The policy is very clear.

I signed up today & it was dummy proof.. Apparently not.

Personal responsibility my man. Don't sign if you don't know what it is.

Hi, I would like to join in suing LTF if you are still planning to. I have a different story of their abusive bahavior and breach of my contract.

Contact me at amalroba@yahoo.ca please. Also have you filed a complain with BBB ?

If you didn't yet please do as BBB is keeping these cases in file to present. To government institute if they see a trend or pattern in LTF customer service.

Lifetime Fitness in Estero, Florida - Corporate isolation to service industry essentials.

Our Boca Raton facility underwent a wood flooring resurfacing starting on Sunday August18th and was supposed to take a lengthy nine days, and necessitated most of the second floor activities to be closed down including of course the basketball court, access to squash courts and spinning studio. No contractor showed up on the Sunday and the basketball hall was 90% completed by the Thursday. Contractors worked half a day painting a logo on Friday and since then NOTHING. Today is Monday with again no activity. Speaking as a Maintenance Director four complete days have been wasted and reimbursement for the nine days of unavailable useage has been declined to what is a large % of regular members. There has been no co-ordination to their needs by management and no follow though by corporate indicating a disinterest in membership services. This is becoming a national corporate epidemic as borne out by diversion from service industry quality to the balance sheet and short term gains. Without membership satisfaction, nobody is too big to fail.

Lifetime Fitness in Cranberry, Pennsylvania - Customer Servivve Hung up on me

I went in to Warrenville location to cancel on Aug 1st ( 30 day notice as they had told me when I signed up for membership an year back) and they told me that I had to pay for Sept as well. I called to talk about this and they connected me to "member service" and some Christa picked up, after I asked to connect me to her supervisor she just hung up on me. So much for the money they are looting - and apparently I have to pay even if I do not step my foot into their center.

Lifetime Fitness in Troy, Michigan - Save your money, it's not worth it

I moved and was unable to go more than a couple of times a month. I stopped going and eventually called to cancel, they said I had to pay even though I had not used it for more than two months, that I could not cancel until I paid. They then lied in a number of emails and voice mails saying that they would forgive 90% of the bill if I went on the maintenance for $10, then I could cancel a month later. Just a scam to get me to call. I was ineligible. They lost a customer, I have had other people join in the past, never again.

@JerseyGarbage

You must be one of those people that doesn't believe in reading fine print. It's up to the consumer to cancel their membership.

Until they do so, they're still a member whether they use the service or not. If you're going to become a member of anything, it's your job as a responsible consumer to be aware of the cancellation policy and how it will affect your bank account.

UM DUH. If you do not cancel and do not use ANY gym, they will still charge you.

That is your own fault.

Most gyms require a 30 day cancellation notification. Get with the program.

Lifetime Fitness in Palatine, Illinois - Policies to Rip You Off

Cancellation policy requires one months notice. I tried to cancel online but the corporate office doesn't allow you to so you have to go into the club or send a certified letter. I went in August1 and they are going to charge me to the end of September. I called corporate office who held it over my head "you signed the contract". It should not take 60 days to cancel a health club membership and you should be able to cancel online. Lifetime Fitness only cares about taking your money, not helping their members. Go to another facility instead.

Only an Area Director has ability to approve a non-sop cancellation. The General Terms Agreement you signed stated "one billing cycle notice." It then went to give an example.

All members who signed before December 2013 are subject to this. December - moving forward, they require a literal 30 day notice. This is not retroactively applied to those joining up to December.

People need to start listening & reading what they sign. Adulthood.

This person is 100% accurate about his/her interaction with Lifetime Fitness. The comment below is also accurate about know what you sign.I went to Lifetime today to cancel my membership and I got the same response about the 30 day notification and they said they cannot cancel my membership in the middle of a billing period.

Therefore, I will be billed through September 30th. Honestly, they probably could, but the but the bottom line is they wouldn't.

The General Manager who spoke to me said she could not cancel my membership 30 days from today. I have a difficult time believing her.

they are making far more money off the lessons, than your membership would cost them to lose. It is a business move on their part. The parents are paying for a family membership and then have to pay additional high fees for the lessons.
